MARPOL I - Prevention of Pollution by Oil from ships

MARPOL Annex I Covers prevention of pollution by oil from operational measures as well as from accidental discharges; the 1992 amendments to Annex I made it mandatory for new oil tankers to have double hulls and brought in a phase-in schedule for existing tankers to fit double hulls, which was subsequently revised in 2001 and 2003. 


Different MARPOL I Oily residues come from vessels:

  • A TYPE: crude oil cargo residues from oil tanker vessels, and ballast waters affected with crude oil.
  • B TYPE: hydrocarbons cargo oily residues from oil tanker vessels, different of crude oil, which density are below 1. 
  • C TYPE: sludge, bilge waters and oily residues from vessel’s engine rooms, fuel purification equipment, and engine oils.

Water with hydrocarbons:

  • HC recovery (centrifuging)
  • Sale of hydrocarbons as fuel
